RAILS ALONG THE SHORE
A coastal railway works like a slow-moving maritime observatory. With mountains pressing from the inland side and open water immediately below the embankment, the horizon remains unobstructed for hours, shifting from granite headlands to tidal oyster lagoons.
Vietnam’s Hai Van Pass: Da Nang to Hue on the Reunification Line
While road traffic between Da Nang and the former imperial capital of Hue now bypasses the mountains via a highway tunnel, the metre-gauge Reunification Railway still traces every contour of the Hai Van ("Ocean Cloud") Pass. Shortly after clearing Da Nang Bay, the locomotive slows to 25–30 km/h as it begins climbing the granite shelf that divides central Vietnam’s climate zones.
Looking down from the carriage window, the track sits perched on stone retaining walls directly above crescent-shaped coves reachable only by boat. After threading six short, soot-darkened stone tunnels, the train descends toward Lang Co Station, where the line runs along a narrow sandspit flanked on one side by the East Sea and on the other by calm brackish oyster lagoons framed by misty peaks.
Carriage Experience: Even if you are not riding the full Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City trunk, booking a daylight seat on a regular Reunification Express (such as SE2, SE4, or dedicated Central Heritage commuter services operating between Hue and Da Nang) lets you savour this 103-kilometre stretch in soft morning or late-afternoon light.
Japan’s Sea of Japan Shorelines, Taiwan’s Pacific Coast & Sri Lanka’s Southern Littoral
Across island nations in East and South Asia, coastal railways serve both as everyday lifelines for fishing villages and as extraordinary scenic corridors for unhurried rail travellers.
